Claudia McCarthy and Larry Malone (Chamber of Commerce)
Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to be the guest facilitator of today’s Phenomenal Friday.  Looking back over my career, there are many people who I could give a “Shout Out” to.  They influenced my career and personal life tremendously.  I chose education because it is a “purposeful” and “humbling” profession.  It is an incredible honor to be in education and to work with so many different people, all who dedicate their lives to empowering students.  This applies not only to the teacher but to everyone that makes our District a whole.

Unfortunately, our profession is not always looked upon with honor and the makeup of a classroom is often misunderstood.  Make no mistake, though, within every classroom is a staff member who has acted as a parent to a child, a role model, coach, advisor, mentor, fan, and/or friend.  I love running into my former students.  I hope that I have made a difference in their lives.  I know they made a difference in mine.  They taught me compassion, tolerance, understanding, acceptance, and unconditional love, as I’m sure many of your students have taught you.  Everyone who plays a part in the education of a child is to be thanked for enabling that child to follow his/her dreams.  May you continue to inspire!
 ~ Donna Meyers

“Shout Outs”

"Congratulations to Claudia McCarthy for being selected as the 2017 Citizen of the Year by the Millville Chamber of Commerce. She was chosen for her many years of dedication to the city of Millville and the Millville athletic community.  Recently Claudia was honored at a luncheon, where they spoke about her many years of coaching, her numerous successes and the countless lives she has positively affected. Congratulations once again to Claudia McCarthy. Well deserved!!"

"Congratulations to Christian Varga for being honored by the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association this past Monday night (January 22, 2018) for earning his 100th career win as the Millville Boys Soccer coach 2017 Fall Sports Season."
~Dave LaGamba

"Mrs.  Donna Makos is a teacher in our three year old program and works diligently and tirelessly with her three year old children on a daily basis.  She and her two coworkers, Mrs. Megan  Scherbekow and Mrs. Andery Peterson engage children to produce the most learning possible.  She collects data in GOLD, our assessment system, IEP data for select children and LEAP data for the autistic children in her classroom.  She is a fully LEAP certified teacher.  She also represents CFC on the diversity team and has turn-keyed all information to our staff.  She works equally hard to involve parents in their child's educational plan.  Her classroom is visited by teachers throughout the state as a model Creative Curriculum classroom.  Her smile and love of her children is obvious the minute you meet her!"
~JoAnn Burns

"Mrs. Horin just completed a project with her Anatomy & Physiology I classes where they created a full size poster to mimic a Movie Poster advertisement. In these posters, the students demonstrated how the nervous system (nervous tissues) interrelates with 3 other major systems (integumentary; skeletal; muscular) and tissues (epithelial; connective; muscular) in the human body. The students came up with very clever titles like "Anatomy Park", "The Anatomy League", "Nervous Wars", and the "Nervous Rangers" to depict the important "characters" of the nervous system. Ms. Horin is constantly creating interactive projects to demonstrate student mastery in creative ways. Great Job Michelle!:
~Stacey Musey

"A special thank you for Rob Desantis for devoting so much of his time and energy to our music programs and school functions.  His personality and dedication to our school is amazing!"
~Stephanie DeRose

"Thank you, Katherine Rossbach, for all that you do to help our students. From the idea of bringing a new elective to our department, to running the Student Council, to organizing the Holly Ball, to all the LGBTQ meetings and outreach that you offer to our students, I offer you a big "Thank you"!"
~ Bridget Borlak

"This past week Mr. DeSantis had one of his students accepted into the world renowned Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps.  Hundreds of students try out for the Corps each year and last year they won second place in the international Drum and Bugle competition.  According to Mr. DeSantis the Vanguard is playing in the “major leagues” of marching band.  Students from all over the world try out for the Santa Clara Vanguard.   Mr. DeSantis’s dedication to his students is highly respected and admired.  He spends countless hours at the school, his weekends at competitions, and is a positive role model on every level for his students.  Congrats Rob on Julia making the Vanguard!"
~ Steve Matusz

"Nurse Pruett does an exceptional job taking care of our Bacon Bears. She treats all cases and students with care and tact, and she has excellent and timely communication with parents regarding issues that arise.  Furthermore, she is organized and continually fills me in on situations I need to know.  Michele, thank you for professionalism and for your devotion to our students and school!"

The stage set for Mr. Millville
Come out tonight for a little entertainment as the Mr. Millville 2017-18 is scheduled for 7pm at Lakeside Auditorium (due to construction). Not to toot my own horn, but I made my debut on stage in the second Mr. Millville circa 1993. I was quite talented in those days (WINK WINK, sarcasm intended) as I wrote and acted in a comedy skit entitled “Baby Olympics”. Truthfully, it was a duet with a friend of mine. We both came to the same realization after we hastily agreed to be in the competition that neither one of us had any real talent. But it was a fundraiser after all and we weren’t quitters.

So under the master supervision and guidance of Mr. Joe Bollendorf, senior class advisor ’93, we teamed up. I do not think Mr. Bollendorf ever imagined it would lead to a picture of me in the newspaper wearing a diaper and riding a big wheel. Those were the good old days. The skit included a jello eating contest (where yours truly was victorious because I cheated by hiding handfuls of jello in my diaper). Second event was big wheel jousting, sadly I was defeated. The tie breaker event was a strength competition… I can’t share how it ended here but if curious feel free to ask me next time you see me. Best of luck to all of the students bravely participating in tonight’s contest.

Shout Out Section

"I want recognize Mrs. Donna Meyers. Since joining the District Team she has worked to improve the various aspects of our Human Resources Department as well as been a great support for our school administrators when dealing with student discipline. Donna is called in only on the more difficult and stressful incidents. She works well with our vice-principals and principals to help our students learn from their mistakes. It goes without saying that sometimes parents and students are less than happy with the outcome. Mrs. Meyers is professional at all times and applies a firm, fair, and consistent approach when considering discipline hearings. Thank you Donna for being a team player and always working in the best interest of our students, staff, and community. * Also, congratulations on the birth of another grandchild, Hunter!"
~ David Gentile

"Evelyn Echevarria is a preschool four year old teacher.  She strongly believes in the family connection to educating and raising a child.  She conducts home visits and follow up visits where she helps  the parent/guardian set goals for success.  On the follow up visits they review those goals.  She teaches children life skills and prepares them for 21st century living.  Her studies are motivational and pertain to "real life" investigations.  She stresses the social-emotional learning and how it relates to every day life."
~ JoAnn Burns

"Jimmy McCarthy's culinary classes have prepared food for a couple of events I was in charge of over the past month or so. Jimmy's students take great pride in their work. The food is always prepared just right, the presentation is always outstanding, and their professionalism is top notch. Jimmy has done a phenomenal job growing our culinary program over the past several years and continues to impress. Thanks, Jimmy."
~ Bobby Barber

"Kara Lunemann has worked hard to keep her class on track.  In what has been an interesting year to say the least, Kara has maintained a positive outlook, and despite the challenges, she continues to provide engaging, quality instruction for all her learners.  Kara has had to contend with some frustrating circumstances through no fault of her own, yet she's handled each one like a pro.  Great job, Kara.  Your students are lucky to have you."
~ Mike Coyle

"Camie Howard has been a wonderful addition to the Silver Run Family.  She works tirelessly to support our students, staff, and parents.  She shows compassion and understanding in the most trying of circumstances."
~ Eric Reissek

"Jennifer Salvati and Teale Carroll - Thank you for taking on the huge challenge to be the coaches for Lakeside’s inaugural First Lego Team who represented Millville Public Schools during competition. Your students’ project on the Automatic Rainwater Filtration System was awesome!!! It was quite obvious during my visit with your after school club that your students were using their critical thinking skills to design, build and test their robots. They were also developing their team-building and presentation skills for this competition. Congratulations and continue the good work!"
~ Joanne Colacurcio

"Jodi Richter is the first person many people encounter when they call or visit Rieck Avenue School. Her smile and cheerfulness make a great first impression for our families and guests. She is always willing to help out any staff member, and does so with a smile. On top of that, she keeps our finances straight and is terrific at taking care of our copiers. Thanks for all you do, Jodi."

"Jennifer Salvati and Teale Carroll led the Lego Robotics team at Lakeside into competition on Saturday at the Salem Comm College "Robot Rumble." The students, from all walks of school life, worked together to build a water filtering system and a programmable Lego robot. It was really impressive to watch these students work together in "coopetition." Teale and Jennifer's work and example showed through these students."
~ Brian Robinson

"Bonnie Martinez-Goertz is an outstanding team member that is doing great work that is behind the scenes but vitally important. She keeps us on track with Projects and make sure that It Equipment and Supplies are purchased and available when needed."
~ Dan Wright

"Special thanks to Pat Wulk for her dedication and commitment to the Millville Thunderbolt Academy. Her positive and get it done attitude helped us have over 90 percent of our students complete the PARCC assessment. She is a valuable asset to this district and brought a professional and positive attitude to our school every day.  Also thanks to Holly Capertina, Shawn Jenkins, Casey LaFerriere , and Beth Pirnik for their support in helping to test the students at Thunderbolt. I also want to thank Stephanie DeRose, Dave Vorndran and Kristen McManus for their support and help."
~ Harry Drew

"Patrecia Schwailik-Giunta has embraced the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) data by collecting, organizing, and identifying our lowest level readers within our general ed. and special ed. populations. Her Power Point presentation during Lakeside's Language Arts department meeting highlighted students that are reading below grade-level. Thank you for sharing the SRI data with the team!"
~ Maggie Colina

"Dominic Carapelli is the head custodian at the Senior High School where he has been such a valuable staff member. He always addresses concerns with a practical solution (or two) in mind. Whenever there is an unexpected issue, Dominic solves it in a calm yet expeditious manner. Dominic continues to be a pleasure to work with even though the renovation has added more stress and responsibilities to his day. Thank you!"
~ Kristin McManus

"Thank you, Lisa Glynn, for always being helpful to your colleagues. Whenever her fellow teachers have a question, Lisa is quick to offer an idea or assistance."

I trust everyone enjoyed the Holiday Break and welcomed in the New Year with friends and family. We are back into the routine, ‘knock on wood’, hopefully the weather will cooperate so we do not have to go further into late June for graduation. For many, the first snow day each year is a welcomed break. The snow is pretty to look at and if you have children of your own you get to watch them light up. Sledding, snowball fights and hot chocolate…by the second I find myself focused on clearing the driveway, walkway…I think about late June graduations – So hopefully, we are done with snow for the school year.

Quick bit of news as it relates to snow closing…the high school (9-12) will move their PD Day to the January 31, 2018 and CFC, Elementary, and Middle Schools will maintain the original date of January 29th, 2018 (as written on the District Calendar).

Please make plans to join us January 16th/ Tuesday for the second strategic planning night for "expectations for the future". Please plan to arrive anytime after 6pm as we will begin at 6:30 promptly. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Shout Out Section

"Kevin Dick (district maintenance), Frank Lowers, Glenn Hunter, and Benjamin Pierce (Bacon custodians) went above and beyond on New Year’s Eve.  Frank called me to let me know that there was a broken pipe and water was pouring into Bacon School’s cafeteria.  I called Kevin at home. He was having guests over but left his own party to help Frank find the valves to stop the flood.   Kevin called me back.  They had gotten the water shut off but Frank had a huge mess to clean up.  I arrived at Bacon School about an hour later.   Frank, Glenn, and Ben were already there dragging wet rugs out of rooms, mopping up water, and cleaning up collapsed ceiling tiles.   They spent their New Year’s Eve getting Bacon School cleaned up and ready to open on Tuesday.   It’s nice to work with people who are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done."
~ Ryan Cruzan, Facilities Manager

"Shout out to Vicky Allen and Courtney Fry for running a (successful!) fundraiser in December for our new Special Education scholarship. I appreciate the time and dedication they have to the program and our students.   They are back at it again this week planning our next fundraiser for January."
~ Jessica Kauffman

"A big Holly Heights shout out to both Pat Fredrick and Suzanne Sheppard for organizing our holiday giving tree.  They helped so many of our families with the support of our generous staff."
~ Steve Saul

"I wanted to take a moment to thank Justin Dodge for setting up the Administration Dashboard on Google. I was very impressed with the ease of the process and how quickly it can be updated. This makes our reporting process streamlined."

"Amy Gehringer bought Teddy Bears for her students prior the Winter Break. Kids who earned them were given the teddy bear and were able to get their picture taken in front of a gigantic bear."
~ Spike Cook

"Bridget Borlak works tirelessly to meet the needs of the English Department. She keeps the staff abreast of all state mandates and provides them with the necessary tools to meet those requirements. Bridget has been instrumental in the development of the Early College High School Pathway.  She is a valued and respected member of the department. Thank you for all that you do!"
~ Maggie Colina

"Special thanks to Lauren Daigle and Alicia Discepola for providing staff Tech Tuesday emails. Thank you for your new ideas and passion by providing staff not only these emails but also your hard work and dedication throughout the school year."
~ JoAnne Colacurcio

"Since I came to Bacon, Spike Cook has made himself available to me for questions and advice. He continues to check in with me from time to time, and he's gone beyond the extra mile in terms of support and encouragement.  Thanks, Spike. I appreciate it!"

"A great deal of thanks to the English department curriculum teams who always are at the ready to develop and revise the curricula to ensure that our students get the world-class education they deserve. Your expertise and dedication to our students is so appreciated. Keep the great ideas coming! Janet Todd, KT Fouhy, Katherine Rossbach, Erin Maines, Sue Zatzariny, Dana Siniavsky, Danielle Carroll, Tara Cotton and Lisa Maldonado."
~ Bridget Borlak

"This week, I want to recognize Mr. Kell, our school business administrator. He has the most difficult job of overseeing the District’s budget. He has to deal with me when I come in and say “I need money to support items like teacher mini-grants or other worthwhile expenditures for our students” although not originally in the budget. If it is good for kids I always try to find a way. But that really means I go to Bryce and say “find it”. Like whoever is in charge of your household budget, there are times where they would love to give everyone what they want. The truth is, if you ran a budget by giving everyone what the want you would quickly find yourself unable to provide what we need. I would like to thank Mr. Kell for providing funding for what we need and often finding opportunities to support the things we want too. Great job Bryce!"

I want to wish everyone a very special Holiday/Winter Break. May your time be spent with the people you love! Please make time for yourself. Find time to energize by doing the things you enjoy – do something just for you. All too often you give of yourself to help make others happy. You have to make time to recharge your own battery.

Thank you for all you do to make our District amazing. There are so many wonderful staff members recognized this week. Let’s get right to it…

The message below is from Danielle Tombleson about a special project she and her class created. Thought you would enjoy hearing about it.

Hi Eric,
I wanted to invite you into my classroom tomorrow morning as we will be putting together care packages for the homeless! We began this ‘Homeless Care Project’ in the beginning of December by reading about a family who suffered (and prevailed) through homelessness. This hits home for a lot of my students as many of them have experienced homeless themselves. It inspired me to get my students TRULY involved during this holiday season.

As a class, we brainstormed a quite large and very thoughtful list of items that the homeless needed the most. They researched prices for each items and managed a budget to create a list of their top 10 items. I had all intentions of putting together a care package, but because my students were so interested in the project…I decided to start a GoFundMe page with a goal of $300. In two weeks time, we have raised $400 in donations as well as bags and bags of items from my friends and family! I am so overwhelmed with the support I received!

I hope you will come in and be a part of this special project!
~ Danielle

“Graham Gant has worked enthusiastically and successfully to promote and encourage the German program. His partnership with GAPP created opportunities for German students to experience life in the US, and this summer our students will travel abroad to experience German language and culture. Graham's passion for the program is palpable. His efforts are greatly appreciated. Danke schoen, Herr Gant!”

“Jason Harrington has been a great help to both our students and Mr. Gant. His help with the GAPP program has assisted in making this exchange program a real buzz for our students. Velen Danke, Jason!”
~ Bridget Borlak

“A big thanks to Amy Spanbauer for making sure our families have what they need this time of year.  Amy has been working tirelessly to ensure a number of needs are met.  From coordinating with Cumberland County College to working closely with our teachers and gathering their donations, Amy has made sure our students and their families receive the gift cards and presents needed to make this time of year special.  Thank you, Amy!”

“Thanks to these phenomenal educators, Barbara Lore and Amanda Devita, for organizing the Trim a Tree event here at Bacon.  Many families joined us that night for an evening of treats and ornament making, and it was great seeing students spend time with their loved ones.  Many staff members helped out that night, and Barb and Amanda brought it all together and made it happen.  It was a warm, family-friendly, and fun night.  Thanks, ladies!”
~ Mike Coyle

“Special thanks to Megan Finney for all her hard work and dedication to the students and staff at Memorial and Senior High. Megan has made both of the school libraries a safe haven for all students with her warm, welcoming atmosphere.”

“Thank you to Jimmy McCarthy and his students for providing the delicious wraps and cookies for the STEM Day at Lakeside. The pride Jimmy takes in his work is truly inspiring and I am continually impressed by the food Jimmy and his students prepare for many of the events in the district.”
~ JoAnne Colacurcio

“Thank you to Robby Williams, Cody Hand, and Tim Garrison  for taking on a last minute project to survey the entire eighth grade in two days.  It is great to work with a team who is ready to assist when needed.”
~ Pat Wulk

“Bobby Barber and Ryan Hudson organized a very successful STEM day for LMS 8th grade students. This event was attended by both parents and students and highlighted some of the awesome programs at the High School! Bobby and Ryan did a lot of work behind the scenes to make this event special! Go Junior Bolts!”
~ Spike Cook

“Lynn Tyszka has created special rooms at Holly Heights - one for K-2 and one for gr. 3-5 - where teachers can take their classes to improve their social skills in positive ways through play.  Sentence strips suggest positive ways to speak to friends.  Lynn spent a lot of time choosing what to put in the rooms and setting it all up.  Lynn, thank you for thinking about the whole child.”
~ Debbie Homan

“Cindy Ciocco and Diane  Cavagnaro are members of our Preschool Intervention and Referral team.  They  work with the children and assist the teachers by developing behavior and learning plans to determine if a referral is the best next earning step for the child's success.  They model and work directly with the implementation of the plan.  In addition to their daily schedule they took on the CFC Giving Tree this year. They coordinated the giving of gifts for at least 26 families from the Child Family Center.  This included contacting families, getting assistance from our staff and delivering the gifts.  They also coordinated the giving of additional gifts from a generous CFC family friend donation so that many more children received assistance at this special holiday time.”
~ JoAnn Burns

“A great big shout out to Dan Bertonazzi and Terry Tracey, School Psychologists for the elementary and secondary Child Study Team testing teams.  Even when the referrals and re-evaluations keep coming, they never give up.  Their can-do attitude and strong work ethic make them excellent team members and role models for all of us.”
~ Nora Zielinski

“We know that building positive relationships between a  teacher and a student opens the door to honest communication.  Melissa Sooy has built this relationship with her students based on honesty and trust. She meets with her students during her free time to help them with their studies, assists them in making the right decisions and counsels them at all times.  It’s no wonder that they return to see her long after they have left the middle school. These are true attributes of being a TEACHER.”
~ Maggie Colina

“Mebane Sherman from Senior High and Lynn Riley from Memorial for being amazing with scheduling coverages especially during PARCC testing.  They did all of this with a smile and always a positive attitude!!!! Thanks so much ! They rock!”
~ Stephanie DeRose

“I want to give a Holiday Shout Out to the Professional Development Specialists: Beth Benfer, Margaret Keefer, and Justin Dodge. They are creatively working to support our staff and help the District grow. If you haven’t done so already, go to their webpage and sign up to have them guest teach a lesson, or provide a training session of your interest. They have positive attitudes and a willingness to go the extra mile. Thank you PDS’s!”

The week before the week before the Holiday Break is often a strange one. It can feel like each day is moving extraordinarily slow while the undercurrent of excitement in the students starts to build. This week impacts us too, we begin panicking about whether or not we have finished our shopping lists, hung decorations…are we ready for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa etc…? If you are anything like my wife and I, the answer is no. There is still much shopping to do for the kids and extended family members, plans need to be made to send out our Christmas cards, and yes we just finally put our tree and decorations up.

I almost forgot if your family is fortunate enough to have the little ‘elf on the shelf’ visitor you are likely setting an alarm at some strange time in the middle of the night to make sure his/her magic is working and they have moved to a new location – EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! Heck, in our house, we have two elves and their reindeer since we have two children. Despite all of the parts of this time that are stressful and overwhelming, it is also a wonderful time of year.

The school year is well underway and you have made strong connections with the young people you care for each day. The snow on the ground (the first couple of times) is beautiful to see. The lights on the homes and the smiles on the faces of our students are equally bright. We all work tirelessly each day for others please make sure that this time of year you make a bit of time for yourself – your loved ones – and if you are able to help make someone less fortunate have a better Holiday please do so. You will not regret the feeling of adopting a family for the Holidays. Watching others who otherwise would have done without this time of year open presents, or eat a great meal really goes along way to honor the true spirit of the Holiday Season. Have a great weekend, make sure you check off the ‘to do’ items on your lists. As always, be kind to each other because you know who also has a list, and he is checking it twice!

Shout Out Section
“Our two day custodians, Confessor Velez and Melissa Sorantino, keep this building clean and as “germ free” as possible.  They are in constant demand for clean-ups on playgrounds, hallways and classrooms.  EVERY room has a bathroom, two sinks and a floor abused by sand and water tables and three and four year old exploration.  There are evening family events every month and classrooms have family events on regular basis requiring special room arrangements, additional chairs, tables etc.  Then there is the popularity of being the “Fix It” people to 600 charming children’s play equipment and materials.”
~ JoAnn Burns

“Janette Herbert works tirelessly behind the scenes with mountains of data needed for a variety of required reporting. She is always going above and beyond to accomplish what is asked of her.”

“In addition to being a fantastic teacher, Amy Kimmel is a valued member of our SCIP Team.  This year Amy led the charge to improve student attendance.  I am excited to report that through the first 3 months of school we have seen our # of chronically absent students fall almost 8 percentage points.  Congrats Amy!  Nice Job Team!!”

Mrs. Colon goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the students in her bilingual class.  She advocates for each student and makes sure that their parents are well informed and able to actively participate in their child’s education. Mrs. Colon works closely with families who have been separated due to Hurricane Maria.  She even communicates with parents who have remained in Puerto Rico creating a strong home-school bridge. Thank you Mrs. Colon!”
~ Maris Lynn

“Congratulations to Elaine Haughey on having a portion of her memoir published. Elaine shared selected readings from the memoir with members of our staff last year. She has now been published in the online literary journal wonderworks.org. This online journal is written by people with disabilities and those close to them. You can read the selection at http://www.wordgathering.com/issue44/reviews/haughey.html .”

“Eric takes great care of our ESL students during the day. His compassionate approach with our students is resulting in them gaining English skills confidently. In addtion to that, he's been working in our Club 21 program, where he's been using creative approaches to teaching and the projects, which the students are really enjoying. There is never a time that Eric is less than enthusiastic about his students and his belief in their ability to learn. Thank you, Eric.”
~ Brian Robinson

"I’d like to give a shout-out to Eileen Sorantino who is our secretary on the 3rd floor at Culver. She has done an amazing job helping get everything organized, ordered, and delivered for both our math/science mini-grants and our STEM day we are having at Lakeside next week. Everything she does is done well and quicker than anyone could expect. Thanks, Eileen!
~ Bobby Barber

“I would like to send a heartfelt shoutout to the entire staff at Lakeside Middle School for their patience, teamwork, and support for each other during this difficult week!”
~ Spike Cook

“This week I would like to put a spotlight on Dr. Spike Cook, Lakeside Middle School. As the principal of more than a thousand students, the students’ families, and a large staff, there is a prodigious demand on Dr. Cook’s time and energy. He constantly works to find solutions that are in the best interest of his students while also keeping a close eye on how his decisions impact his staff and the larger community. He is a caring leader who truly wants to create an exceptional learning space for the MPS students. As he is often the person ‘filing the buckets’ of those around him. I would like to take this moment to recognize him – and hopefully fill his bucket!”

This week, I want to share a serious moment with all of you. It is admittedly a bit of an emotional message and a departure from the previous upbeat messages.

I would like to use my position and voice to draw attention to something that is spreading like wild fire through our society. In addition, my second goal is to honor the life of a young student from Upper Deerfield who has left the world far too soon. By all accounts, this young person was extremely kind and caring. He, like so many of our children, was trying to find his place in the world. Admittedly, I did not know him personally but having a 12 year old son I can almost imagine what he was like. From the pictures displayed at his wake last evening, he was an all-american kid. His smile lit up the room and warmed those around him.

Appearances, however, can be deceiving. People can be unkind. It requires much more strength and effort to be kind to others, especially those who are different from us, than it does to be mean. Easier to talk about people – put them down. Easier to join in when rumor or gossip is taking place than to challenge it. We know that kids can be cruel. We know they can abuse social media to spread half-truths, lies, and at times maliciously target another person. What we don’t want to admit is they learn it from the grown-ups around them. We are the example that they learn from. Not when we are in “let’s teach character education mode” but the way we behave when we think they are not looking. The kids are always watching and learning from us. In order to honor the loss of this young man and use my voice to make an attempt to prevent it from ever happening again I am doing the only thing I know how to do. I am speaking up. Below is my social media post written moments after leaving the wake. I went to pay my respect to the parents although I did not know them or they me. I did not have any intention of being moved the way I have been. Maybe its because I see so many similarities to my own son, maybe it is because I am an educator, who knows the reason. Regardless, I began to type and share the following: (please be kind to each other, and I challenge you to be kind to those who are different than you, be kind to those whom you don’t necessarily like, we all get one life to live, what will they say about you when you move on?)

Parents, friends- tonight I am feeling particularly passionate about my profession - specifically caring for, educating, and leading children as they make their way to young adulthood. I am leaving a viewing for a 12 year old who has left this world far too soon. I did not know this young man or his parents but when I learned about this tragedy it hit home. I have an 8 yr old daughter and a 12 year old son. The father, in his darkest moment, took the time to say to me “hold onto your children”. No words in response would be adequate so I looked to the floor and nodded my head.
We all think we are holding onto our kids! At least I think I am...but if I am honest I don’t check his phone with the regularity I first did. When his response is “don’t you trust me” I admit it put me on my heels a little. The answer is a resounding yes, yes I do trust my kids. The better question, should I trust the rest of the world influencing him and bombarding him through social media? Can I trust that others are working as hard as we do to raise good and kind human beings? We hear the words bullying and harassing so often these days we may become desensitized to it. Simply put, let’s make certain we raise kids that are kind, compassionate, and empathetic. I can hear some who will say things like “toughen up” but the truth is it is much tougher a challenge for kids (and people) to be kind to others that may be different than they are or who don’t quite fit in than it does to hurt them.
Sorry for the long post, sorry if you feel this is sappy. But I don’t care. I am honoring that father’s and that family’s loss in the best way I know how.
“Hold onto your kids!” And teach them to be kind.

SHOUT-OUTS to MPS World Class Staff

"I’d like to give a shout-out to Edwin Fien and Donna Makos at the Child Family Center. I was able to sit in on both of their classes last week and it was really amazing to see what they do. Every interaction with the students is turned into a learning experience and every second of time is planned and utilized extremely well. Both Edwin and Donna are models of excellence for this district."
~Bobby Barber

"We are very proud that Gena Pacitto’s research submission has been accepted for presentation at the Association for Behavior Analysis International’s convention in San Francisco in the coming spring.  Congratulations, Gena!!!!"
~Nora Zielinski

"I cannot speak of the Human Resource Department without speaking of my team of four dedicated women who I thoroughly enjoy working with.  These ladies are responsible for over 1,000 employees, juggling mounds of paperwork, phone calls, emails, inquiries, filing, etc., on a daily basis.  Together they ensure that all employees are taken care of.  They sometimes are the first in the line of fire with employees, parents, students, and visitors, yet they always handle themselves professionally and with utmost respect.  They truly are compassionate and understanding.  The behind the scenes extra effort put forth to assist our employees is impressive! Karen McCafferty, Lisa Discepola, Jamie Gribble, and Zoe Maines, thank you for all that you do.  It does not go unnoticed."
~ Donna Meyers

"I want to give a shout out for Jessica Lieve who teaches the multiple-disabilities class at Rieck Ave. She has done remarkable work with our students. At times the progress our students have made because of the work of her and her aides is nothing short of miraculous. Jess is moving on to another district to start up an MD program for pre-school children, which has been a goal for her. She is a great educator and represents the very best of our vocation."
~ Brian D. Robinson, Ed.D.

"A special shout out to Kristin McManus and Steve Platt for doing an amazing job with PARCC planning.  Each year we discover new obstacles in our planning and they handle it with ease.   Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication!"
~ Stephanie DeRose

"This week, I’d like to give a Bacon shout out to Kim Berry, our PBIS aide.  Kim goes above and beyond in her interactions and dealings with our students and parents.  As a school, we work hard to maintain a positive outlook and attitude in our day-to-day duties, and Kim has embraced this.  From giving students positive re-directions to helping plan fun events and challenges in our assemblies, Kim has worked hard to faithfully implement the PBIS program here at Bacon.  We appreciate her dedication to our school, students, and families!"
~ Mike Coyle

"Bill Emberger has worked tirelessly with our testing coordinator to straighten out over 1000 input errors for our PARCC submission.  Some of the PARCC reports have more than 100 columns of information.  Finding and correcting these errors can take days or even weeks. Often times this means Bill has to step into the instructional side with us to understand why a column should be coded one way or the other.  I appreciate his patience, diligence and willingness to learn.   Sometimes we forget the behind the scene people who help support the work of the district.  Bill, I salute you and all of the “Basement People”!"
~ Dr. Moore

"Holly Heights would like to give a shout out to Lisa Stahlberger.  Lisa is out Library Media Specialist and is always planning creative and hands on activities for her students.  She has been using the Breakout EDU program with her students.  Anyone who has ever participated in an escape the room challenge will be familiar with the concept.  Students have to work cooperatively in various challenges to figure out  a series of locks to open the main box."
~ Steve Saul

"A huge thank you goes to Shari Booz and Erika Zeiters for their work in coordinating the Winter Festival at Lakeside Middle School this week. Their students have grown so much over the first few months of the school year due to their constant encouragement and feedback!"
~ Spike Cook

"Two of our Digital Literacy Specialists, Lauren Daigle and Alicia Discepola, have supported our PARCC testing efforts this week through a series of “PARCCIng Lot” videos to prepare our staff and students for the upcoming testing dates at the High School.  They did this with humor, dedication, and willingness.  Thank you both!"
Pat Wulk

"The American Chemical Society celebrates National Chemistry Week each October. A tradition that began in 1987 with the goal of promoting the value of chemistry in everyday life. This year we celebrate the 30th anniversary with the theme, "Chemistry Rocks". Lois Smaniotto's Chemistry students at Millville High School participated in activities which included growing crystals and learning about rocks, minerals, and gemstones. They also participated in a poetry competition sponsored by the South Jersey ACS. Joshua Sooy won first place for his poem about different types of rocks and was awarded a $75 Visa Gift Card and advanced to the National Contest with the potential to earn a $300 gift card. Alyssa Robbins won second place for her poem describing the structure of diamonds and was awarded a $50 Visa Gift Card."
~ Stacey Musey

"One to Mrs. Nora Zielinski! Sadly, Nora has submitted her retirement intention (which I still have decided whether to accept or deny lol). She is an extremely caring and kid-friendly educator. Her intentions are always pure and dedicated to making decisions that are in the best interest of the students. She works tirelessly, comes in early and leaves later than everyone else. She does this without complaint and always with a smile. I know we will learn exactly how much she does for this district when she is off in her garden or sighting birds (her two favorite hobbies). Before she goes, sometime in March, I feel compelled to highlight how much I appreciate her! A little long for a shout out but bear with me. She is an expert in the field of special education. She is a fierce defender of students’ rights. She exemplifies #MPSWC! Thank you Nora."
~ Dr. Gentile

"The second to Ashley Sorantino, School Outreach Worker, who is doing an outstanding job at Mount Pleasant School! She is passionate about caring for the students at MP. Mrs. Sorantino goes above and beyond the call of her job responsibilities and cares for her students as if they were her own. Often spending late nights sitting with a student in crisis at a local hospital or making house visits. She does everything in her power to reach out to the families in her care. Great job Ashley, keep up the fantastic work."
~ Dr. Gentile

Enjoy your weekend!

Hope you are having an amazing Friday! I’m certain you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving…(we will get Vineland next year).

I want to thank all of those who were able to participate in the strategic planning session earlier this week. With more than 100 participants the conversations were lively and focused on improving our school district. If you were unable to attend please don’t worry – you are welcome to attend the next two sessions: January 16th and February 15th; both will begin at 6:30 sharp in the Lakeside Cafeteria (doors will open at 6pm please arrive a little early so we can begin promptly) we will end no later than 8pm. If you attended the first session please bring a colleague to the next. We want to try to hit 200 participants. Please use the district web page sign in link asap so we can plan accordingly.

I hope everyone has an outstanding weekend!

Shout Out Section

"This week I would like to commend Laura Shepherd in transportation as an employee who exemplifies a world-class standard. She consistently stays until the job is complete, she comes in early, and she never complains. Her positive ‘can-do’ attitude  is a great example for her colleagues. Laura, keep up the wonderful work – I know you don’t require recognition, but you certainly deserve it!!"
~ Dr. David Gentile

"This week I’d like to recognize Charlotte Richardson at Lakeside Middle school.  Charlotte is an exemplary teacher who meets the extremely diverse needs of her amazing students every day. When you enter her classroom the warmth she projects to her students is palpable.  She creates an environment where her students thrive. Further, Charlotte goes above and beyond in her advocacy for her students and in her duties outside of the classroom.  Charlotte demonstrates what it means to be World Class."
~ Maris C. Lynn

"I am very proud to say that Lakeside was celebrated by Dr. Pamm Moore when we received our school data because we had 5 of the top 6 in the DISTRICT!
Congratulations to these teachers for their exceptional work:
Susan Corson - 4.0 out of 4.0
Rita Pettit - 4.0 out of 4.0
Kathy James - 3.7 out of 4.0
Lisa Sanderlin - 3.7 out of 4.0
Stephanie Sharpless - 3.6 out 4.0"
~ Spike C. Cook, Ed.D

"A special shout out to Marilyn Hardwick and Kathy King, learning consultants on the Special Services Testing Teams who handle a HUGE volume of child study team referrals, live by the mantra “test and write,” and somehow manage to get everything done to meet timelines while maintaining an equanimity that can only be termed amazing. We are very fortunate to have them as part of the Special Services Department!"
~ Nora Zielinski

"Shout out to Andy Bingham who is incorporating engineering and math into his art lessons by creating gyroscope arts projects with his students.  His art room allows students to create and express themselves on every level."
~ Dr. Pamela Moore

"I would like to send a shout out to Kelsey Carroll who is a second grade teacher at Silver Run.  I had the pleasure of conducting an observation in her room and I was impressed with her classroom management style, interactions with her students, and her attention to detail in her planning a lesson that enhanced the learning of all of her students.  Kelsey is a future teacher leader in this district!"
~ Pat Wulk

"Rebecca Benson (High School Digital Design Teacher): Becky made invitations for our STEM Day we’re hosting at Lakeside. I came to her with an extremely vague idea of what I was looking for and she was able to create an amazing product in a couple of days!"
~ Bobby Barber

"Casey Wilson -  Casey is a special education resource teacher who has special LEAP training and turnkeys and monitors that with our staff.  She carefully reviews each child’s IEP goals and documents their progress adjusting them and meeting with families mid year if necessary.  She works with children, their families and our staff and provides them with the materials and practices needed for our most involved children.  She models the PBS strategies for our staff and parents. She is a TRUE CHILD ADVOCATE!!!"
~ JoAnn D. Burns

"I would like to give a big shout out to Mae Haas and our entire staff for embracing the breakfast in the classroom program.  The number of students getting off to a healthy start to their day are evidenced by the increase in participation. Sept.-Oct. 2016- 5,646 breakfast served.Sept.-Oct. 2017- 10,887 breakfast served. Overall a 52% increase in participation!!51% more Free & Reduced students are receiving the breakfast they need."
~ Steve Saul

"Karen Kappre – always going above and beyond to get the job done."
~ Daniel Wright, Jr

"A Bacon shout out to Dina Klaudi and Laurie Polof for running a smooth office here at school.  These ladies never need to be reminded of their responsibilities.  They consistently perform their duties effectively, efficiently, and with a positive attitude.  They are proactive in preventing small issues from becoming major ones, and they take initiative to solve problems often before I become aware of them.  Anything I ask of them, they do, even if it requires extra time or effort.  Furthermore, they are simply fun to be around, and they make the time spent here all the more enjoyable.  Thank you, ladies!  The Bears wouldn’t know what to do without you both!"

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the time with your family and friends. It is one of my favorite times a year, and not just because I really love turkey. It is a time to reflect on how grateful we are and how fortunate we are. The adage “things could always be worse” comes to mind. Regardless of how bad you may think things are during a rough patch they could always be far worse. It is at these times where I find the greatest clarity on just how fortunate I am. To have a supportive – loving family, employment, and food on the table. For many this basic needs are lacking. I feel fortunate to work in a generous and caring district. A place where our efforts go to make a difference in the lives of our students. You are truly an outstanding staff! Thank you for all you do for our kids and their families.

Please remember after the Thanksgiving break, we will hold our first open strategic planning session at Lakeside cafeteria, Wednesday November 29th at 6:30-8:00. (Doors open at 6pm) We already have a large turnout on the sign up form. Please spread the word, we want everyone to have their voice heard. Students, staff, parents, community members, and anyone else with a vested interest in improving the Millville Public School District. As we continue our journey to World Class, there are critical moments in time that yield the greatest results. I believe this is one of those times. Putting all differences aside to come together over our common desire to make Millville World Class.

This episode of the Phenomenal Friday includes the inaugural on the road to world class “shout out” section. I asked the administrative staff across the entire district to nominate staff members in their area of supervision for recognition for outstanding effort on behalf of our students and district:

"I’d like to highlight our professional development specialist. They have strived to meet many of our staff at all of our school buildings and attend to their needs to help the district continue to achieve
world class status"
~ Maggie Colina/Lang Arts

"I’d like to see Kim Ale, our social worker, recognized. She not only counsels our students, but helps take of our students’ families by being a great listener, connecting them to services they need, putting together a food pantry at the school, getting clothing for students who need it and the list could go on. In addition to that, she initiated our community outreach. She’ll help anyone who asks, and do so willingly. Because she stays quiet, much of it goes by without fanfare"

"Darlene McClung, one of our resource room teachers, is another person who does so much without being recognized often. She’s anoutstanding teacher who puts everything she has into her students. She works with our students in such a supporting manner, that they gain the confidence they need to succeed because she instills it in them. She has a number of students as “heroes” in the school and works closely with the teams her students are part of. She works with a good number of our staff and never seeks recognition for what she does"
~ Dr. Brian Robinson/Rieck Avenue

"Teacher Alice Bird and Aide Carrie Simpkins set the standard for family involvement.  Each year they do home visits.  In the summer they connect with some of their children (those without all of the experiences) and take children to the beach, boardwalk, local events.  This year they visited a child in St. Christophers who had an accident and was severely burned.  They include their own children in these events and build a real sense of community within their classroom"
~ Joann Burns/CFC

"Candy Devich has been a great manager and is a source of inspiration in her innate skill at organization and implementation. For the past three months Candy has been managing her kitchen efficiently despite the fact that she and her staff has been working shorthanded. While this is concerning to me, she quickly put me at ease and successfully navigated each challenged, with very little need for my input. Candy has adeptly rallied her team to continue to deliver exceptional service and fulfill her responsibility to the students, community and staff of the Bacon Elementary School. If you don’t believe me, look at the staff photo from Halloween, Candy’s the taco.

Again this year, she planned, implemented and managed the safe preparation and service of the annual Holiday Feast at Bacon. Her hard work and diligence to support students each and every day is commendable and her ability to work with students and support them helps to create a very well rounded and successful food service program"
~ Joseph A Rowland/Food Services

"A big shout to both Candy Devich and Stephanie Mulhbaier for planning and organizing Bacon’s annual Thanksgiving feast last week.  It was truly a world-class experience for all involved.  Our entire school was fed a full-blown turkey meal, and logistically, everything came off with no problems.   The students loved it!   It was a team effort, but these two ladies spearheaded everything and made it happen"
~ Mike Coyle, Bacon

"Good morning.  I would like to recognize Allison Buono, Art Teacher, at Silver Run for creating an inviting environment throughout the building with some of the best bulletin boards in the elementary setting.  Her three dimension representations of a school bus and paint can are spectacular.  Beautiful way to greet students, staff, and parents in the building”
~Pat Wulk/SS & Assessment * Testing

"Rob DeSantis and Howard Raudenbush go the extra mile all the time to make their programs the best they can be!"
~Henry J. Hartman/ Fine and Performing Arts

"Gerald Bruman and Shawn Jenkins: Gerald and Shawn have built a successful Engineering/Robotics team as evident through their numerous victories in competitions. They have also built a family atmosphere with that group of kids where they support and care about each other and are genuinely excited to be a part of the program"

"Jennifer Salvati: Jennifer has done an outstanding job with the new STEM elective class at Lakeside! Every time I go in that room the kids are engaged in doing some amazing hands-on activity"
~ Bobby Barber/ Math*Science

"I would like to highlight Terry Russo at Silver Run. Every time I enter her kindergarten class her students are actively engaged in education. She sets the standards high in her class and teaches her students how to reach them while teaching them how to manage themselves. If my child was a Kindergartner, I would want them in her room"
~ Dr. Pamela Moore

"I would like to give a shout out to our student council advisor  Tina Dallas, and our Wellness team advisor Donna Wheeler  for organizing our Turkey Strut where our students donate canned goods  to Help and Hope Ministries.  Students walk their donations to the front parking lot and drop off their donation and then continue around the field for their turkey strut to incorporate some fitness!"
~ Steve Saul/ HH

"I would like to see Janine Chong recognized for seeing a growing problem occurring in our kindergartens – too many children are being referred for evaluations as they struggle to make the transition from CFC to our kindergarten classes.  She is now championing an effort to assess what we’re doing in kindergarten as it relates to the State’s standards for early childhood education PK-grade 3"
~ Debbie Homan/ Supervisor

“With so many outstanding district staff members to choose from, I decided to start with one that I simply would be lost without. I would like to recognize the outstanding efforts, character, and integrity of Vicky Charlesworth. Vicky goes above and beyond consistently without any expectation of recognition or reward. Matter of fact, she will probably be upset for my singling her out here. It is worth the payback in order to share with everyone how wonderful she is. She does so much for the district that goes unnoticed by most but would most certainly be apparent if she were to stop. Her positive attitude exemplifies the world class spirit. She is forever seeking to learn new skills in order to do her job better. Thank you, Vicky!”
~ Dr. David Gentile/ Superintendent

Recognition is at the heart of the Millville Public School spirit as we move forward into the next phase of excellence. We collectively need to focus our energy and attention on those who consistently do the right things. Too often our energy is focused on the difficult students in class, and the same can be said at times for our colleagues. To all those committed to the vision, you will be the centerpiece of our future. Keep up the outstanding work.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving – beat Vineland (weather permitting tonight is the bonfire/firework pep rally at MSHS field 7pm.

Hope everyone is having a great day and you have an even better weekend.

Around the District great happenings continue. Just to highlight a few, our MHS Robotics Club took 1st place recently demolishing the competition, our Marching Band represented at the Clayton Competition, we hosted 20 German exchange students (kudos to all involved)- they celebrated their final night together with dinner, the Inaugural MHS 3 v. 3 basketball tournament was a big hit, and lastly the coffee house singers wrapped up the evening last night. Holly Heights hosted the opening of the WOW mobile. The WOW mobile is the “Wellness on Wheels” mobile response unit that is now capable of providing our students and senior citizens medical as well as dental health services at their doorstep. The partnership with Gateway Community Action Partnership, Inspira, and CompleteCare has removed the obstacle of transportation for some of our most in need families.

Congratulations to Sarah Fryling for being selected as an NJEA/Eagles Radio All-Pro Educator! Winning two tickets to an upcoming Eagles game and dinner for two. Kudos!!

These are just some of the amazing events happening across the district! (If you want to suggest recognition of any that I may miss feel free to send me an email)

Typically I want to keep the Friday email upbeat and focused on recognizing all of your amazing efforts. With that said, I feel I would like to share just briefly a few comments regarding two important issues.

Insight – Substitute Concerns:The issue of substitute shortages. Insight recently held another job fair in order to increase the pool of candidates. It was well attended. They continue to work hard to fill our vacancies and have been successful with the openings given advanced notice. The same day call-outs are the most difficult to fill.

Interesting to note, that as of last year at this time there was a combined absence of 841; over the same period of time this year there were 1041 nearly 200 more absences than last year. This puts a strain on the available pool of candidates. In addition, last year we had 27 leaves of absence, this year same time period, we have 56. I mention this only to highlight that the demand for substitutes this year has been greater than in any other school year in recent history. I am confident Insight will continue to work to meet the demands of the district –

Civil Service
I only want to clarify that the board of education’s decision to put a vote to the public regarding Civil Service has nothing to do with ‘privatizing’ or taking anyone’s job. There are a variety of reasons it is believed that Civil Service is not necessary as it complicates the hiring and human resource management process. The results of the question will not be used by the board for any reason as it was never their intention to hurt their staff members. After learning it has caused so much controversy we asked to have it removed from the ballot but we were told it was too late. Therefore, the board decided to simply not use the results or pursue this issue further at this time.

Have a great Friday and even better weekend!

I hope you are having an outstanding Friday! I love that Fall seems to finally be here… although truthfully I failed to close our swimming pool and my kids were fortunate to be able to enjoy late season swimming during the recent hot days. Goes to show some mistakes work out in our favor.

To update you on the upcoming Strategic Planning process, the Board approved Dr. Charles Ivory to lead the district strategic plan. Dr. Ivory has worked with countless school districts to foster collaboration and goal setting. His work is different than many other strategic planning guides as he focuses intensely on community engagement. I want to encourage you to be on the lookout for future dates and PLEASE show up. We need you. You have valuable insight into where the District should be heading. Regardless of your position, if you are part of this community – you need to participate. You owe it to yourself to voice the suggestions that you feel could make the district better, you owe it to your colleagues to be there to provide a full and balanced picture of the current state of the district (rather than leaving it to the vocal few), and lastly you owe it to our students who deserve only the best. I am so excited about this opportunity because I am confident that when it matters most, you will be there. Unfortunately, the negativity in our lives gets the front row seat to often, for this we will let positivity, optimism, and the fact that we are smarter together guide us to a new era in MPS. The first planning meeting of the board of education will be on November 6th at 5:30 prior to the regularly scheduled board meeting. This work session will be the boards first opportunity to engage with Dr. Ivory and map out the full process to come. Please feel welcome to come as it is an open public meeting work session.

Please visit https://www.krsd.org/Page/1143 to get a look at Kingsway Regional High School engaged in their strategic plan under Dr. Ivory.

Also, here is Lacey Township doing the same https://youtu.be/jSM2Q8Dhaqk

I am confident we will have an even bigger turnout. We want students, staff, parents, community leaders…

Not So Little Brother
Had a great visit today with my ‘little brother’… Who is now over 6 feet tall and a Junior. I feel like he is growing while talking with me. This young man and I met while he was in 4th grade at Wood School. A shy young guy at the time he has really grown into an amazing young man. All of this because of you – our staff has helped him at every step along the way.

Today we mapped out a draft plan to include getting a part-time job (Thanking those at Link ahead of time since I will send him your way for resume help), opening his first savings account, brainstorming possibilities for career or college choices, seeking a little extra help in Algebra ( I certainly needed a tutor, thankfully I had my sister), and lastly pursuing a driver’s permit.

The draft plan will take a village to achieve. Shout out to Ms. Jackson for taking time out of her day for a surprise visit from my little and I. She is one critical support person for him. All of you are that for so many…please take a moment to be proud of how much you give.

We have so many amazing happenings in the MPSD…from championship athletics –

Congratulations to Field Hockey in beating OC after 17 years and bidding for conference title, Cross Country – Boys and girls won the county championship, Boys and Girls Soccer entering into the playoffs, Football Team remains undefeated at 6-0, girls tennis had an amazing season making it to the semi-finals of Group IV playoffs – and always supporting our teams the cheerleaders continue to wow crowds.

Also, our Marching Band is doing a great job and are very busy this season with the various competitions.

Have an amazing day and weekend!

As always #greatdaytobeabolt

Not sure if it was just me but although this was a ‘short’ week it felt long, right?!?

Anyway, I hope you had a great week inspiring our students to make the world a better place.

I enjoyed my time with the Rieck Avenue Jets this week while they completed their study of the Monarch Butterfly. The culminating event began with a parade of their students in butterfly and/or caterpillar costumes, public speaking by students about their knowledge of all things Monarch, to lastly the release of the butterflies who began their journey to Mexico. I was impressed by the students I spoke with who really had a strong grasp of the life cycle of these magnificent creatures. I couldn’t help but reflect on how amazing it is that they can survive the long journey all the way to Mexico.

This week I want to share a recent post by George Couros…He is a Canadian Educator and thought leader in education. I found what he shared this week to be interesting. Hope you will enjoy it as well.

Go Bolts! Have a great weekend everyone-
Dr. G.

By George Couros

Two things stuck out to me this week…
One was that I had the opportunity to work with students on how they use social media and tried to help them focus on “what’s possible,” not on what you shouldn’t do.  When I was introduced at one of the school’s this week, it was announced that I was going to be talking about social media and the students in unison, made a large groaning sound.  I knew (and understood) why.  They were expecting the “don’t do this, don’t do that” talk that they have become so accustomed to.  How inspired would you be to talk about any subject if worst intentions were always assumed?  Although I talk about online safety and the impact of what we do on the other side of the screen, my focus is mostly on how we use the opportunities in front of us to make the world a better place.

The students you serve right now could, at some point, be working for you, working with you, or your boss.  Do you want them to make the world a better place, or just leave it as is?

This thought ties directly into the next…

As I was discussing with someone who was extremely focused on “traditional teaching” and criticizing anything new in education, they shifted the conversation to focus on how we all got into this field to “change the world”.  Yet, as I thought about it, I was struck by the idea that if we really got into education to change the world, why would we gravitate to only the practices that have always been done? Is that not focused more on maintenance, then it is on making the world better?

This is very important to state as I am not an absolutist; not everything new is good, and not everything old is bad.  But we do have to accept that the world is, and always will change, with or without you.  Our hope is that we help our students change it for the better, not just keep it as is.  I have stated this often that I hope to go beyond preparing kids for the “real world”.  I want them to make the “real world” better. Many of those students I worked with this week want that exact same thing and by only focusing on what not to do, we are setting a bar for our students that is much lower than the initial impact we hoped to have when we joined the profession.

We don’t want our students to simply change the world; we want them to make it better.  The best way we can help our students do that for the future is to help them see that they can make the world a much better place today.
